About

Investing writing that shows its working

Financial content tends toward two failure modes: vague encouragement ("invest for your future!") or confident specifics with no arithmetic behind them. The Long View tries to sit in the narrow space between — numbers you can check, assumptions written down, and a horizon measured in decades.

What we publish

The Long View covers the mechanics of stock and index investing: how index funds work and what fees do over a lifetime, how to read the numbers on a stock quote, and the evidence on classic decisions like lump-sum versus dollar-cost averaging. The common thread is that each guide aims to leave you with an arithmetic you can re-run and a stated assumption you can dispute — not a hot take or a stock pick.

How we research

Guides start from primary sources wherever they exist: published fund prospectuses, exchange and regulator documentation, peer-reviewed or widely replicated studies, and the arithmetic itself. Where we use an example, we label it as an example and show the calculation, so you can substitute your own figures and check whether the conclusion survives.

We avoid citing statistics we cannot point you to. If a claim would be useful but we cannot verify it to a standard we would defend, we either leave it out or describe it as a common finding with its limitations attached.

What we do not do

  • We do not give personalised advice. We do not know your income, tax position, risk tolerance or goals. Everything here is general education.
  • We do not recommend securities. Not specific stocks, not specific funds, not "the ten tickers to buy now". We explain how categories work; choosing among them is your call or your adviser's.
  • We do not accept payment for coverage. No broker, fund company or platform pays to appear here or to have a competitor omitted. No affiliate links.
  • We do not use invented data. Figures in guides either come from a cited source or are clearly labeled as worked examples.

Advertising

This site is supported by display advertising served through Google AdSense. Ads are selected by Google, not by us, and their presence is not an endorsement of the advertiser. Advertising has no influence on which topics we cover or what we conclude — the editorial calendar is set independently of commercial considerations.

Corrections

Fees change, tax rules move, and studies get superseded; we get things wrong occasionally. If you spot an error, tell us through the contact page and we will correct it. Substantive corrections are noted in the guide itself rather than made silently.

A note on the calculators

The three calculators on this site run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted, logged or stored. They implement standard financial formulas — monthly-compounded growth, dividend compounding with reinvestment, and risk-based position sizing — and the assumptions behind each are stated on the page, in plain sight.

They are planning tools, not forecasts. A constant 7% is a modeling convenience; real decades contain 2008s. Use them to understand the shape of a decision, then sanity-check the specifics with someone qualified to know your situation.

Editorial standards and corrections

Who writes this. Every guide is published under the The Long View editorial team byline. We are an independent publisher, we accept no payment from any company we write about, and there are no sponsored posts on this site. Questions, corrections and removal requests all go to yanli20140223@gmail.com.

How an article is produced. We start from primary sources — official documentation, published research, regulator guidance and the product's own help pages — then prepare a draft, which a person edits and checks against those sources before publishing. We state this openly because it sets the right expectation: our claim is accuracy against the source material, not fieldwork we did not carry out.

What we refuse to do. We do not invent figures, studies or expert quotes. We do not recommend a product because we were paid to. Where a conclusion depends on an assumption, the assumption is printed in the article rather than hidden in a footnote.

Limits you should know. We publish general educational material about investing. It is not personalised investment advice, not a recommendation of any security or strategy, and not a promise of any outcome. Investing carries risk, including loss of capital.

Corrections. If a number, a step or a source is wrong, write to us with the page URL and what you found. We aim to reply within 48 hours and to correct confirmed errors within two working days. Substantive changes are noted at the foot of the affected article; typographical fixes are made silently.
